Jog-a-thon

We love our Jog-a-thon shirts (thank you, Stonegate PTO!)

How fun to see Dinger at our Jog-a-thon!

Pioneer Days

To prepare for our Pioneer unit, Mrs. Reeves and I mixed up our classes for six mini lessons, on topics like how to pack a wagon, careers pioneers might've had, and which plants are safe to eat.

Of course, the last lesson was:
When kids came back to school on Monday, April 25th, the desks had been magically transformed into wagons!
On April 26th, we took our walking pioneer field trip: 3+ miles of pulling wagons, carrying lunches, and walking around Lake Washington!

We would stop occasionally for Mrs. Reeves to show us some of the edible plants along the way!

What a beautiful place to stop and have lunch!

We also ran into some wildlife--a real lizard (or snake with legs, depending which third grader you ask...)

Now we're ready to go on the trail!

Field trip to Old Sac and Crocker!

Our fourth field trip (on April 14th) started with a trip to the Old Schoolhouse, where we were transported back in time to 1854.
Boys on one side, girls on the other (and lashes for anyone who dares to cross over)

Iysha demonstrated one of the punishments, holding books in each outstretched arm...
...Mary showed us the dunce seat in the corner (thankfully with no dunce cap)...
...and Nate got the "honor" of standing with his nose in a circle on the blackboard.

(thankfully none of these kiddos deserved any of the punishments!)

Other kids got to read from the primers...

...and write on chalkboard slates

We also got to use the pump in the yard!

After the Old Schoolhouse, we went for a walk near the river and did some sketching.  We had recently learned the art term "perspective" and worked on some perspective art!

Nate took his work seriously and did the below drawing:
After our Riverwalk, we went to the Crocker Art Museum!

We had lunch in the Crocker courtyard, and then walked back for our Old Sacramento scavenger hunt!

What a GORGEOUS day!

Egg Drop!

On April 8th, third grade students completed in the annual Egg Drop.

We start off with easy drops, and they get progressively more difficult.

Congratulations to Mary, the first ever winner from one of my classes!  Well done, Mary!
